Welcome back!
International education and scholarships no longer remain mere dreams for ambitious students now. But what happens to you, when you need urgent medical attention in foreign country? You will need the international students insurance, of course!
This international student medical insurance policy conditionally defrays all medical expenditures that a student might incur while studying overseas. A student is entitled to financial benefits only if his condition doesn’t violate some overriding exclusionary clauses. A Pre-existing condition, is one which required medical attention in the look back period, which could vary from 6-24 months before the stipulated coverage begins. Pre-existing conditions are not excluded from coverage.
An injury or ailment will not qualify for international students insurance cover if the related medical document is not provided to the company within 3 months of treatment. This clause judges the necessity and urgency of the treatment. The policy does not extend medical benefits for free treatments, or for treatments that incur unreasonable expenditures. A medical expenditure must be validated and prescribed by a doctor to qualify for insurance cover.
Medical treatments that are of an unnecessary nature are not covered by the medical insurance for international students. This would immediately exclude any operations or treatments for cosmetic modifications. It also includes medications undertaken for scientific study or in the pursuit of any experimental objective.
Injuries received due to conscious violation of legal and political rights are also not covered by international students insurance. So, the insurance policy would not pay for any instance that is deemed willful injury. Injuries sustained in war, while pursuing criminal or terrorist activities are not offered financial insurance cover. The policy also does not extend its medical benefits if the injury/ illness are treated in the student’s native country.
The medical treatment would not receive financial benefits if it incorporates alternative/ experimental medication. This clause effectively disqualifies sensory therapeutics like aromatherapy and music therapy. A doctor’s certificate is also mandatory if you want to receive financial coverage for medical expenditure incurred. So do not self-treat yourself, or ask quacks to attend to you.
You are also not advised to demand insurance cover for injuries sustained in pursuit of adventures sports. High risk sports automatically disqualify any insurance cover for medical expenses incurred. If such activities are likely, riders that cover sports and dangerous activities may be added on to some policies at the time of purchase.
Regular diagnostic check-ups do not qualify for insurance cover, unless in connection with a disease/ illness. Medical and substance abuse, and alcoholism treatment expenditures are also to be borne by the policyholder. These are some basic clauses that would disqualify any application for international students insurance.
